The aptly named Ready Player Me service allows users to create a personal avatar from a photo, upload it to VRChat, and join the rest of the community on PC or Oculus Quest. Let’s introduce them in no particular order. These platforms allow users to create their digital selves. Several companies are already diving into the metaverse, providing avatar services. The sky’s the limit and imagination is the vessel to get you there. If you want to look like a cybernetically enhanced version of yourself – no problem. If you want to be a giant Care Bear – cool. A representation of yourself within the digital world, with almost no limits. Like any good video game, your first port of call is to make your character. One key element to participating in such a world is your avatar. Additionally, the lure of this vast oasis appears to be too much for anyone to ignore as it is woven into the very fabric and economics of the society depicted. Here they perform all their life tasks and ultimately live inside this world as the real world has simply become inhabitable. In brief, Ready Player One depicts a time in world history when the majority of people are living inside a computer-generated simulation – The Oasis.

If you haven’t, I’d heavily advise reading the book for the full experience. Ready player one?įor those that have seen or read Ernest Cline’s interpretation of the future these ideas should not be so alien. Metaverses are growing at frightening speeds and there has arguably never been a better time to stake your claim in one or several of them. Land parcels sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars in virtual worlds, while users are presented with ownership over digital avatars and their fashion. The modern-day equivalent of the mid-1800’s gold rush is in full swing as virtual reality or the metaverse becomes the next frontier. You can read more about the features and the associated privacy and safety settings over on the VRChat blog.Goldrush for the next frontier: Avatars in virtual reality The Avatar Dynamics system is available in VRChat now. There are ways to disable interactions immediately, and players can also set rules and change settings to limit interactions in different ways - they can be turned off entirely, or set to just your friends, or changed on a per-user basis. With this new system also comes a host of new settings that allow users to define and quickly change who can interact with their avatar. Users can set colliders on certain parts of their avatar to result in different things - a costume change, a sound effect, or a state change, for example. It also works on Quest, meaning that Quest users will be able to see moving hair, ears, clothes and more with real-time physics for the first time.Īvatar Dynamics also allows users to create unique interactions with avatars through user-defined colliders and tags, as seen below. There are several different interaction types that can be set up for an avatar. It is a more optimized replacement for DynamicBones that allows users to create physics-based bone and skeleton structures on avatars. One part of the system is PhysBone, shown above.
